David Maguire Closes Gap To Michael Cullen

David Maguire closes the Fiesta ST Championship gap to Michael Cullen

Reigning champion David Maguire was the highest points scorer as the ‘The Trailer Company’ Fiesta ST Championship completed its second triple header race weekend of the season at Mondello Park today, Sunday July 8th. The championship will now go down to the wire at September’s Leinster Trophy event as Maguire’s points haul allowed him to close the gap to championship leader Michael Cullen.

The weekend began well for Maguire with pole position for race one, which he followed up with his second win of the season in Saturday’s opener. Cullen could only manage a fifth place finish, having dropped to sixth on the opening lap, giving Maguire the championship boost he needed. The resurgent Brendan Fitzgerald took his first podium of the year in second place with series sponsor Darragh McMullen third.

For race two Cullen would start on the front row with Maguire down in sixth. Cullen made the most of the start and got away from pole-sitter David Kidd. As Cullen pulled away Kidd had a train of eight cars backed up behind him all battling for position. Eventually the close combat led to the race being stopped early, as a coming together between Paul Swords and Maguire saw Swords smash into the pit wall and end up on his roof on the main straight. The race was not restarted, leaving Cullen with the victory ahead of the delighted Kidd, who took his first Fiesta ST podium, with McMullen once again third.

The final race was led from start to finish by Brendan Fitzgerald but he had the attentions of Maguire throughout. A train of four drivers ran nose to tail for the entire race but somehow Fitzgerald held on to take his first win of the season from Maguire, Cullen and McMullen, with the top four only covered by half a second at the flag.

The ‘The Trailer Company’ Fiesta ST Championship has just one event left to run now and the title chase is down to two drivers. Championship leader Cullen takes a twenty three point lead over reigning double champion Maguire, into the season finale, which takes place on September 15th and 16th on the Mondello Park International Circuit.
