  • Where It Raced:

Berger’s first win was the start of a very successful history for Benetton who went on to win twenty seven Grands Prix, two drivers world championships and a single constructors crown. Berger took the honour of being the last, as well as the first, driver to win for the team when he took his last ever victory in 1997 at Hockenheim with what was arguably the best drive of his career.

The Benetton name had been associated with Formula One since 1983 when it first sponsored Tyrrell. Benetton entered Formula One as a constructor in 1986 when it acquired ‘Toleman’, the British Formula One team which it was then sponsoring. The team continues to this day under the name Renault, having been bought out by the French manufacturer in 2000.

In the teams’ first season they managed to get BMW on board with what was reputed to be the most powerful Formula One engine of all time, a turbocharged 1500cc V8 producing well over a thousand horsepower.
