Mondello24 Cycle - Mondello Park

Mondello24

Mondello24

Mondello24 is an exciting 24-hour endurance cycling challenge that takes place in the unique setting of our famed international race circuit.

Now in its fourth year, the 2024 edition of Mondello24 takes place on June 22nd-23rd.

Our biggest event yet in 2023, the camaraderie and truly unique atmosphere of Mondello24 made it such an epic journey for the more than 100 teams and over 300 riders who embraced the challenge of starting at noon on Saturday and cycling through the night until the finish at noon on Sunday.

While leading riders achieved impressive feats (the winning team covering almost 900km) Mondello24 is an event for all level of cyclists, male or female, solo or team. For the majority of riders it is about challenging themselves and pushing their personal limits to new heights.

Whether you are an experienced endurance cyclist or a novice looking for a new challenge, Mondello24 has a category to suit all levels of rider. You can break down the challenge by taking it on with club mates and tackle the race as part of an 8, 4 or 2 rider team or you can take on the ultimate challenge and complete the 24-hours as a solo entry. This is an event for those who not only want to test their physical and mental strength, but who also want to share the experience with others and meet new people in the process.

It's More Than a Race

One of the unique aspects of Mondello24 is having all the support crews based in the paddock which is located in the centre of our circuit. This creates a real festival atmosphere as teams set up camp for the weekend to cater for all the needs of their riders over the 24-hours of racing. Crewing pit stops, rider change overs, feeding riders, arranging areas for riders to have a power nap, this is an event that even non cyclists can actively be a part of.

The atmosphere in the paddock and pit garages is as much a part of the race weekend as the action on the track.

Mondello24 is a weekend of celebrating cycling that the whole family will enjoy.

We are also proud of the fact that the biggest winners of Mondello24 over the past three years are charities across Ireland who benefited from almost €100,000 from riders who used the race to fundraise for a variety of worthy causes.

Mondello24 is open to teams of up to eight riders. Teams get to share the distance they cover as they relay around the track.  Each team will have just one rider on track at any one time with riders handovers taking place in pit lane where the incoming rider will transfer the team's allocated slap band across to the rider who is about to take over riding duties. Each team's rider roster is completely down to the strategy they feels will best suit its rider abilities.  There is no minimum or maximum time each individual rider on a team must complete. You can decide on your team strategy and change it as needed throughout the event.

The nature of our race means that teams are not just about the competing riders but also very much about your support crew members. At our inaugural event we witnessed just how important a good support crew was in getting teams through the 24-hours.  Mondello24 is very much about team work, even for the solo riders, and it is a great way for riders to involve club mates and family members in this truly unique racing challenge.

The atmosphere in the paddock and pit garages is as much a part of the race weekend as the action on the track.

We understand that organising teams can be a challenge in itself and that riders can suffer injuries in training or suddenly become unavailable for other reasons. Once a team has been entered, it will be possible to make alterations to the final line-up for race day right up to the eve of the race should it be required.

Mondello24 is for road bikes as this is a drafting event.

No Time Trial bikes or E-bikes are permitted.

The use of TT/Aero bars and full TT/Disc wheels is also not permitted.

All riders entered for Mondello24 must sign on prior to taking part. Sign on will take place at Mondello Park on the morning of the event during which each team will be given their race pack which includes race numbers and each team's slap band.

Details of sign-on times and location to be confirmed in lead up to race weekend.

Being a 24-hour race, it will start and finish at the same time of day just one day apart. The third edition of Mondello24 will begin at midday on Saturday, June 22nd, and finish at midday on June 23rd.

Start - 12:00 noon
Finish - 12:00 noon

Solo riders and teams will roll out together at the same time.

Mondello Park will organise three practice session in the run up to the event for all registered riders (Dates TBC). This track time is included as part of the race entry fee. At least one of the practice sessions will run from late evening into darkness so as riders can get familiar with the circuit layout in darkness.

As a 24-hour race, riders will ride into the sunset, through the darkness of night and greet the following morning’s sunrise. As Mondello Park does not traditionally run events through the darkness of night, it does not have flood lighting around the circuit. It is therefore up to each rider to have adequate front and rear lights on their bike for the duration of the official night period of the race (approximately 7 hours in the month of June). An official lights on period in the race will be announced closer to the race weekend. Lights must be bike mounted only - No helmet mounted lights permitted.

Depending on how much riding in darkness you will be doing, you may need a second set of lights/batteries. Mains power will be available throughout the event in order for riders to charge lights.

Mondello24 will be timed by Pop Up Races with each rider carrying their own unique timing transponder that is mounted to the front fork of the bike (using cable ties).  This will provide live lap by lap data and show individual timing data for each member of the team as well as giving live rankings of the team's category position throughout the race.  Each team captain will collect the transponders as part of their Race Pack on the morning of the race and will be responsible for giving each rider their allocated transponder and race numbers for the rear of their jersey.  The race timing can be tracked live on the internet throughout the race.

Entry and set up in the paddock will be available on the Friday evening of the race weekend and again on Saturday morning before the race start (exact times will be confirmed closer to event).

Only participant's support vehicles will be allowed into the paddock for set up. All other vehicles can park in designated parking spaces outside the paddock. Crews wishing to stay on site overnight on the Friday are welcome to do so with facilities available on site.

Each solo rider and team will be allocated a lot in the paddock for support team set up. This will be allocated closer to the event weekend. There will be access to electricity and WIFI in the paddock.

There will be showers and toilets available throughout the event.

There will be 24-hour food, teas, and coffee available within the paddock. There will also be freshwater stations available in the paddock 24/7.

Our restaurant, Cafe Moto, will prepare a menu of breakfast/meal options for race weekend with plenty of 'race food' options.

There will be full time medical support throughout the event including an ambulance on-site.

Mechanical services will be available before the event in the paddock. For information about mechanical issues on the track please see the rules. However, everybody is expected to bring the basics with them for the event i.e. Puncture repair kit, spare tube, pump and tyre levers. It is strongly advised that you know how to fix a simple puncture as this could save you a lot of waiting time on the day.

There will be mechanical service vehicles available over the 24hours. If you encounter a problem that you are unable to sort yourself on the track, call the Mechanical helpline number, which you will receive at sign on. Please give clear and precise information on the nature of the problem and where you are located.

The nearest backup team will be sent to assist you, but please understand that they may take some time to reach you. For more info please see the event rule book.

Presentations will take place at 1pm on Sunday 23rd June at the podium in the Mondello Park bar.  The winners in each category will be the riders that cover the most laps in 24 hours.

We aim to provide a package that will allow all levels of riders to enjoy the challenge that is Mondello24 in the unique setting of our amazing race circuit. The goal is to create a cycling festival feel where all members of your team and their supporters can enjoy and be a part of the experience.
